Elonva Description
Elonva is a prefilled injection.
Elonva is a newly developed medication used by women undergoing fertility treatment to stimulate the development of more than one mature egg at a time. It is used together with a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist.
The active substance in Elonva, corifollitropin alfa, is similar to follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a natural hormone in the body. FSH stimulates the production of eggs in the ovaries. In corifollitropin alfa, a peptide (a short chain of amino acids) is attached to the FSH to prolong its activity in the body. As a result a single dose of the medicine can be given to stimulate egg production for seven days, thereby replacing daily injections that are normally required with other FSH medicines.
Corifollitropin alfa was produced by a method known as ‘recombinant DNA technology’. This means that it is made by adding a gene (DNA) to cells so that they can produce corifollitropin alfa.
Elonva - What's Included
Elonva comes as a prefilled injection containing corifollitropin alfa as a solution.
It is intended for subcutaneous injection and is available in two doses:
100mcg/0.5ml and 150mcg/0.5ml.
The Difference Between Elonva and other FSH medications
Elonva (Corifollitropin alfa) is approved for use in the European Union and many other countries in the world.
Three studies have shown that it is at least as effective as follitropin beta and its benefits are considered to significantly outweigh any associated risks.
The main difference to established FSH medicines is that Elonva only needs to be administered once a week (as opposed ot daily injections).
Elonva Uses and Side Effects
Elonva Uses & Indications:
Elonva is used in women who are undergoing fertility treatment to stimulate the development of more than one mature egg at a time in the ovaries. It is used together with a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist.
It is also indicated for the treatment of adolescent males with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, in combination with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Elonva Side Effects:
The most common side effects with Elonva are headache, nausea (feeling sick), tiredness, pelvic pain and discomfort, breast tenderness and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). OHSS occurs when the ovaries over-respond to treatment, causing abdominal swelling and pain, nausea and diarrhoea.
For the full list of all side effects reported with Elonva, see the drug insert available online.
Elonva must not be used in patients with tumours of the ovary, breast, womb, pituitary or hypothalamus. It must also not be used in women with abnormal (not menstrual) bleeding from the vagina without a known cause, primary ovarian failure, enlarged ovaries or ovaries with cysts, polycystic ovarian syndrome or in women with a history of OHSS.
